The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) was established pursuant to the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted on 9 June 1998 by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and which entered into force on 25 January 2004.¹ The Protocol instituted a permanent continental judicial body mandated to strengthen the protection and enforcement of human and peoples’ rights within the African regional human rights framework.
